NARRATION

(Arsenic Internal Dialogue)

My name is Arsenic. I have lived in Rodentia all my life. This city is etched with filth. Crime covers the place like fleas across a dog’s back. But not for long.

The lightning arrives and as it strikes in the background, the speaker is thrown into relief. A rat cloaked in a jet-black poncho can be seen. Their features are covered by a gas mask on their face, heavy boots on their feet and bandages reinforcing their fists. A bundle of weapons is strapped across them. A pocket radio crackles into life on their hip.

RADIO:

Calling any unoccupied units, we have a disturbance, possible aggravated assault, apparent shouts, and screams have been reported by neighbours and passers-by between 14th and 5th

The rat rappels down the side of the building via a rope attached to the building and drops the last 20 feet to the street below.

EXT. Street Level, Night

The rat jumps on a motorbike and sets off into the dark. They weave through traffic surveying their surroundings as they flutter past. Soon they arrive at 14th and 5th where the aggravated assault has been reported. Shops have been broken in to, glass litters the pavement and shines iridescent in the moonlight. The rain continues. Arsenic parks the bike down an alley and wanders back out into the street, surveying his surroundings, its quiet, far too quiet.

ARSENIC

(Assertively)

Anyone here? He shouts into the deathly quiet night. No-one responds.

ARSENIC

(Fed up)

“Typical” mutters to himself.

He then rummages through his trench coat looking for something. His hand wanders into his top breast pocket, where his searching stops, he pulls out a clouded glass vial, something moves inside. Even with the gas mask, Arsenic’s disgust at the creature within is evident.

ARSENIC

(Grimly)

“Blood mite, you better not fail me now.”

He holds it in front of him slowly moving in a clockwise circle. Suddenly the Blood Mite springs into life jumping to the top of the vial trying to move forward.

ARSENIC

(Still grimly)

“This way it is then.”

Arsenic traipses cautiously down the street moving the glass vial around like a compass or diving rod as he goes. The blood mite’s vigour suddenly reaches new heights, practically braining itself against the top of the vial in its haste to taste blood. Arsenic slides it carefully back into his coat pocket. And takes up a fighting stance with a low guard. The mite has brought him to a department store; the streetlight above has been damaged, but the flickering light it provides illuminates the pavement slicked with blood. Arsenic pulls out a torch and attaches it to his lapel. The double doors of the store have not been knocked but snapped off their hinges. He looks down into a puddle and faces his reflection.

ARSENIC

(Psyching himself up)

There are people in there who need you. You’ve faced worse.

Arsenic steps forward into the dark interior and disappears from sight.
